SATURDAY 3 MARCH. CTC/ Fairtrade 10 mile Cycle Challenge Ride to Bosham

Our CTC group had been asked to plan and lead a short ride in order to support Fairtrade in a publicity event. Arthur had kindly volunteered to do this.

It was a fine sunny afternoon following three similar days and so there was a good turnout of 26 riders at Chichester Leisure Centre, 4 club members included.

After riders had signed in at a desk at the Centre photos were taken and we were sent on our way by the Chairman of the District Council. We cycled along West Street, taking the cycle path at Fishbourne to cross the main road to Old Park Lane and hence to Bosham. We stopped here outside the Co-op shop for refreshments of bananas oranges and bottles of water provided by the Fairtrade Organisation. We returned on the cyclepath alongside the A259 and back into Chichester proceeding along West Street and down South Street all ringing our bells which attracted a lot of attention and smiles.

At St. Mary’s Church we were treated to tea and cakes and a visit by the Mayor and his wife with more photos and speeches.

Lanzarote. Week to Saturday 3 March.

This week has stated warm and dry with temperatures about 20C with clear skies. There were light winds in the first part of the week but getting windy over the last few days.

Below is another picture from last week of Playa Blanca Marina in the evening

Saturday evening of last week was particularly clear skies and I did an evening ride to the Lava Coast near El Golfo. I set up after sunset by a tidal pool for this Star trails shot. 60 pictures of 30 seconds each taken over 30 minutes and later combined in software.

32 miles for the evening.

On Monday I did a ride over to the opposite coast and La Santa. I stopped at a nearby village which looked quite uninteresting. However after going through it there was a beautiful bay where I stopped for a picnic lunch and sunbathing.

On the way back I had a request for assistance from a group of 5 French racing cyclists. One of their number had a puncture. They had a spare tube but the bikes were hired and none of them had a pump so my mini pump saved the day. Good deed for the day! 39 miles today.

On Wednesday I met up with Christine and her brother. They were staying in Playa Blanca and had hired bikes for 2 days. We met at a cafe overlooking salt flats at the start of the Lava Coast road to El Golfo. With the Lava Coast road still firmly closed to all we took the long route round to El Golfo and great views of the half eroded crater.

Then it was lunch at a restaurant by the sea with good views of crashing waves. Then it was along the coast as far as the start of the closure to Los Herbiveros where waves come in to create caves under the lava.

44 miles today.

On Thursday I did a half day ride stopping where the end of the runway is alongside the cyclepath. I took pictures with my SLR of planes coming in the land. This one comprises 4 pictures as the plane approached. This was edited later to blend the 4 planes into a composite picture.

Then back to base and an Italian Ice Cream on the prom. 12 miles today.

On Friday I had a rather windy ride to Teguise. On the way there I stopped at a cafe and came across a quite talkative parrot. It was very good at saying “ola” Spanish for hello when anybody new turned up.

It was a day for animals as when I stopped in Teguise Square for a picnic lunch I spotted this dog on a nearby roof. A good caption for the picture might be “Don’t do it you can have better bonio’s”

Then it was down to Costa Teguise and back on the coast. 43 miles for the day.

My mileage for the week was 170.

Lanzarote. Week to Saturday 25 February.

This week has gradually warmed up from 18 to 20C with more sun and lighter winds than last week.

Sunday to Tuesday I went on holiday! Can you have a holiday during a holiday? I did anyway. For a special occasion I went to Playa Blanca on Sunday and stayed 2 nights at a 5 Star Hotel and on the Monday did a day trip to Fuerteventura which is the next Island to the south.

On the way there I went to look at the El Golfo road. Those who were out here a few weeks will know that the road is closed for a few months to take it further inland to stop it falling into the sea. However cyclists were allowed through. This time they had strengthened the barricade, though I managed to get through. After a mile though I decided not to go further as they had taken away the road.

Then it was on down to Playa Blanca where I went first to the far west of town to take a look at the old and new lighthouse and have my picnic lunch. While there my Mercian was admired by a tourist who was also into cycling. He said it had a great colour scheme, great style. Martin should know that.

Then it was on to the east side of town to the Hotel situated just above the Marina. 34 miles for the day.

When booking I had asked about keeping the bike in the room and that was no problem at all. Such a difference it attitude compared with the UK or France for that matter. The hotel covers a large area with the rooms arranged like a village in separate small blocks and with an imitation Church and Volcano. Below is an evening  HDR picture of the hotel looking across the pool to one of the restaurants

On Monday I took the ferry to Fuerteventura which took an hour. Fuerteventura is bigger than Lanzarote but the scenery is not generally as good with out the dramatic lava flows of Lanzarote. I did a day trip there about 6 years ago and took the coast road which I found to be very busy. This time I went inland into the hills. This road was quite busy but I turned off onto quieter roads. The scenery is very large scale and desolate looking.

38 miles for the day.

After returning on the ferry to Lanzarote I took more pictures in the evening including this Star Trails one. The shot has a small castle in the foreground. This is on a headland only a few hundred yards fro the Hotel entrance. The view is looking due south towards Fuerteventura and the slight curve in the trails is due to the view look towards the south celestial pole below the horizon.

On Monday I rode directly back including the 1250ft climb to Fermes, the last bit of which I walked after last years incident. 16 miles for the day.

On Friday I did a ride to Teguise and then Costa Teguise. On the way to Teguise I passed a big yard full of goats. They had not been there before so I stopped for pictures. One goat got curious and put its feet up on the wall to get closer to me no doubt hoping for food but also posing very nicely.

I stopped for a picnic lunch in the Square by the Church at Teguise. Then it was down to Costa Teguise and back on the coast via the cyclepath route. 41 miles for the day.

My mileage for the week was 129.

19 February 2012 Ride to Portchester Castle

A frosty start and a cold NW wind today, but loads of winter sunshine.  I was met at the cross by Colin, Jeff, Roger and Ray.  We took the Centurion Way out of Chichester and turned off towards West Stoke and Funtingdon, up to Compton for coffee.

The short sharp climb up to Chalton was the first hill of the day, then up past Butser Ancient Farm and over to Clanfield.  At this point things unravelled slightly, we lost Ray, Colin and I went to find him, Jeff and Roger cycled on and took a different route!  Luckily I had mentioned Hambledon and when Colin Ray and I arrived there, (having come along the ridge past the Sustainability Centre) the others were settled at Lotts Cafe.  That became the lunch stop, since time was getting on.

After lunch we took a fairly direct route down to pretty Southwick and from there took a steep climb up to Portsdown Hill.  Stunning views in the sunshine.  Ray left us in Havant, while we made our way up to Rowlands Castle for tea.  We came back via Westbourne and Clay Lane.

An enjoyable ride, even if we didn't make it to Porchester Castle!  Mileage from the cross 54 miles.

Lanzarote. Week to Saturday 18th February.

This week has seen gradual improvements in the weather with little cloud by the end of the week and temperatures up to 20C.

My ankle sprain has gradually improved over the week until I am now able to ride in the hills and almost walk normally.

Sunday, Monday and Tuesday I took it easy with rides along the coastal cyclepath, all with the same destination, Arrecife. On Tuesday I took the SLR and on the way took this picture of a plane coming in to land over the cyclepath which borders the end of the Airport runway.

I then went on and took pictures in Arrecife Church. This one is an HDR Vertorama, a Panorama going up from floor to ceiling. It comprises 7 3 exposure HDR pictures so 21 images total combined.

Saturday Ride -11 February.  Bognor Regis library to Manor Nurseries, Runcton

A lovely winters afternoon.... bright sunshine, a cloudless sky and no wind - but very cold, the temperature never going above 1 degree all day, and rapidly dropping as the sun set. The temperature the previous night had dropped to -6.3, in marked contrast to the recent Blog entries from our foreign correspondent!

Despite the cold, there were 8 of us at the start point - me, Alan, Christine, Julian, Carol, Steve, Ray and guest rider Peter, who chanced upon us at the library and whose Wisper Electric bike had drawn some interest.

We set off on the usual backstreet tour of Bognor, winding through to the Arena and North Bested, then along the Chichester cyclepath via Colworth to Merston pond.  Out of town it had not warmed up sufficiently over the past couple of days to allow the snow which fell on Thursday night, to thaw.

From Merston Lane it was a short sprint to the Garden Centre and its Palm House Restaurant.

The return run was via the rural isolation of the farm tracks at Parigo Farm, back on to the Lower Bognor Road, and then into Bognor via the Sea front.

All in all, just under 12 miles.

Lanzarote. Week to Saturday 11th February.

This week has been cloudier and with more wind that usual and cool by Lanzarote standards at about 18C rather than the average of 21C.

My ankle sprain has prevented me riding in the hills yet but flat rides on the coastal cyclepath have been OK.

On Monday Lewis led Joy, Martin, Val and Ern to the south of the Island to Playa Blanca. On the way back they rode over the big climb to Fermes at 1250ft. I led Peter and Harvey on the coastal cyclepath via Arrecife to The Castillo de San Jose above the Port on the far side of Arrecife. The Castle was turned into a Museum of Contemporary Art by Cesar Manrique. The picture below is an HDR of the main Exhibit Hall with the brightly painted top of a piano in the foreground.

We had a drink in the spacious bar restaurant at the base of the Castle overlooking the Port. After a stop by the Church of Arrecife for a picnic lunch out of the wind we returned with a required Italian Ice Cream stop back at Puerto del Carmen.

On Tuesday Martin did a ride to La Santa and Famara on the far coast while the rest of us stayed put in the high winds.

On Wednesday Lewis and Joy flew home. I led Peter, Harvey, Martin, Ern and Val on a short morning ride along the Cyclepath to Playa Honda between the Airport and Arrecife. We stopped at a cafe for a drink.

In the afternoon bikes were packed up. In the evening we had a meal in a nearby Chinese Restaurant. This has some beautiful decor as shown in this HDR picture.

All of us at the Restaurant.

On Thursday the others left for the Airport at 12.30 and I saw them off.

The last couple of days my ankle has improved more and I hope to be back riding in the hills next week.

Below is another HDR picture from last week taken at the entrance corridor to the Mirador del Rio viewpoint.

Lanzarote. Week to Saturday 4th February.

This week has remained warm and dry at 20C though getting a lot windier later in the week.

On Sunday 29 January we had a ride to the Cesar Manrique House a Foundation which is build around Lava Bubbles in the rock. With fairly light traffic we took for a change the main road up to Tias which is shorter but steeper than the back road. Then it was across to San Bartolome after more climbing. We had a pleasant wait for Peter on the edge of town in warm sunshine.

Then it was a long downhill to the town of Tachiche and the Cesar Manrique House. I took a few HDR pictures here. The first one is of the Exhibition Gallery with some enhancement of the floor.

We continued down to Costa Teguise and a Picnic Lunch on the Prom, Lewis, Joy and Val went down to the beach for a paddle.

30 miles for the day.

After a rest day on Monday we had a long ride on Tuesday to view the Lava Caves in the north of the Island. We all met for an early 9.00 start at the Apartments. Baker Lewis delivered the bread.

Martin  Lewis and Joy took the hard route via the 2000ft climb over the northern mountains. I led the rest on the cyclepath via Arrecife to Costa Teguise for elevenses. Then up a 500ft climb with a rest at the top at a beautiful gateway structure.

Then it was on the main road on a wide hard shoulder and not a lot of traffic to the Caves where we met up with the others. Access to the Caves is by guided Tour. The caves have beautifully done lighting and are part of a long lava tunnel from a Volcano. At this point there are upper and lower levels and at some points the upper level can be glimpsed from the lower level such as in this HDR picture.

The end of the Tour is at a shallow pool with a perfect reflection. See this HDR picture. This is also a Verorama, a panorama upwards and comprises 4 HDR pictures of 3 exposures each blended together so a total of 12 images.

It was while I was taking pictures here that I was struck by my latest accident. To get a low angle I was crouched down. When another Tour Group arrived I got up too quickly, overbalanced and fell over and strained my ankle in the process.

I limped back out of the Caves and managed to lead the others back to base ok, with a little worry that the swelling would make it too difficult to ride so kept up a good pace. 58 miles for the day.

For the last few days it has been off the bike with lots of rest, elevation and ice. By yesterday and today it had improved with short walks possible.

On Wednesday Lewis led the Group on a beautifully clear day to ride to visit the Fire Mountain National Park where they took the Bus trip round the Mountain. Only buses allowed so bikes had to be locked up. Peter and Harvey took a short ride along the coastal cycleway.

On Thursday Lewis led all of group save me the to the Volcanic Coast at El Golfo. They stopped for elevenses at the Arts Centre Cafe at Yaiza. Then on for a picnic lunch at El Golfo and a coincidental meeting  with another member of West Dorset CTC staying at Costa Teguise. Picture provided by Peter,

At El Golfo there is a crater which is half eroded by the sea.

Then it was along the coast and up the massive climb to Fermes including a 22% grade. 37 miles for the day.

On Friday the plan was to go to Mirador del Rio at the far north of the Island. Peter decided he would never make that so hired a car for the day and Harvey and I joined him.

The cyclists were Martin, Lewis, Joy, Ern and Val. They got as far as San Bartolome where most decided the winds were dangerously strong and turned back. Martin didn’t really notice the winds and went on and completed the 65 mile ride with little difficulty. We in the car met up with him at Haria and Mirador del Rio.

The car trip was good with visits to La Santa, Famara at the base of 2000ft cliffs, Teguise Castle, La Nieves at the top of the 2000ft cliffs, Haria and the highlight of Mirador del Rio where there are views from 1700ft across to the small Island of La Graciosa.

We finished with visits to Orzola in the far North and the Caves at Jameos de Agua.

Today was a rest day with the wind even stronger at 31 mph.

Sunday 29th January. Ride to Wiston Tea Rooms
A cold day for the ride this Sunday, but at least no frost to start.  I swapped my helmet for a warm hat.  No-one turned up at Walberton Pond, I decided to press ahead anyway.  I took the usual route to Wiggonholt for tea - on the way up through Madehurst I had to shout some choice language at a wee terrier that was trying to attach itself to my left foot!

After tea on by Stream Lane through West Chiltington.  I had a little diversion through Thakeham and then on to Ashington and finally to Wiston.  The place was heaving with cyclists, a big group that had come down from Caterham, lean boys with even leaner bikes.   I then spied Bob from Horsham section and had lunch with him, nice to see a familiar face.

On the way back the sun came out a bit more which was welcome.  I went via Warminghurst church and up by Smock Alley back to West Chiltington.  I carried straight on to Coldwaltham and then Coates and Barlavington and made a slow ascent of Duncton with tired legs.  Back through East Dean and home.

My milage for the day was 62.

Lanzarote. Week to Saturday 28 January.

This week has remained warm and dry at 20C.

The first HDR picture shows a method of giving an enhanced shine or chrome look to a car. I tried this a few times before when I was in Lanzarote last year. It works well with HDR and is best with cars having well saturated colours and well shined already. I spotted this one in a street near my Apartments and is a hire car waiting for a well off customer. I am not too much into cars so I cannot give the exact model.

On Monday I did a ride to Teguise and then Costa Teguise. I stopped for a picnic lunch in the Square by the Church and during my break a man came round on a Donkey

On Tuesday I took a late afternoon ride to El Golfo for sunset pictures with my SLR. I decided on the way back to return on the quiet El Geria road rather than the busy main road along the coast in the dark. I noticed that the clouds were clearing and a good star field was visible. I unpacked the Tripod from the bike rack and camera from the panniers and set up in a Restaurant car park. The main light on the horizon is from the small town of Tinajo to the North. Brightening the Star Trails did the same for the light and the clouds but I liked the effect so left it that way.

I had a couple of rest days mid week until the others flew in Thursday afternoon. Those joining me were Harvey, Peter Wilson, Martin from Dorset and 2 of his friends Ern and Val who have also been on some of my trips.

Friday was an exceptionally good day with clear blue skies, and warm at about 21C. We met on the Terrace outside my Apartment.

Then it was on the back lane up to Tias and further up to Mastache with a stop at a bar for elevenses. Then along the top to San Bartolome and stops first to view a camel and then to visit a bike shop. Then a long 6 mile descent to Playa Honda. We stopped at a Restaurant fronting the beach for a light lunch, I took a picture here of Martin’s Mercian Bike on the left and mine on the right. When choosing colours for my bike I liked Martins so much I choose the same colours for mine.

Saturday started sunny but later clouded over with a northerly wind and temperatures down to only 19C. We started with the standard back lane route to Tias and a stop at the top to regroup.

Then it was more up to Conil and then the high point near La Asomada at 1i00ft. Then it was onto the smooth surfaced but fairly quiet man road along the spine of the Island and a fast 300 ft descent to Yaiza where we stopped for elevenses in a café in a new Arts Centre.

Then it was a climb across lava fields and a stop for a picnic lunch beside the Tourists Camel Centre. Then past Fire Mountain and a stop at the Visitor Centre. We stopped briefly beside a crater for a Photo op.

Mileage for the day was 32.

My mileage for the week was 137.

Sunday 22 January. Ride to Stansted

A short ride had been planned for today and the lunchtime venue was billed as Rowlands Castle but Changed to Stansted as the former has been closed during January.

9 of us, Alan Elizabeth Sam Keith Harvey Arthur Lyn Graham and Avryl, met at Chichester Cross on a clear day with patches of sunshine, temp 8-10 degrees but a strong cold wind from the west. We battled against the wind along Clay Lane to Woodmancote where we turned off towards Southbourne and Westbourne. We went down the unsurfaced Mill Lane through Lumley emerging by the lake in Emsworth where we stopped for coffeeat the Greenhouse Cafe.

We continued on through Westbourne and hence to Stansted for lunch.

We were blown home in the afternoon through Funtington, the loop round Woodend to Stoke, towards Lavant tuning off to Hunters Race and then along Centurian Way to Chichester.

It seemed too early to end our ride. We miss the cafe at the Roman Palace which is now closed but Harvey came up with the bright idea of trying the teashop in the Cloisters of the Cathedral.  It is open 10 - 4 on Sundays and provides a good tea and a nice window seat for cyclists!

Lanzarote. Week to Saturday 21 January.

This week has remained warm though slightly down at 20C.

On Sunday 15th January I did a short out and back ride to Arrecife along the Cyclepath in the afternoon. The picture below was taken from part of the cyclepath.

Then Sunday evening with clear skies I rode up to the Plateau at 1000ft to take a Star Trails picture from inside a big Crater. By the time I got there about sunset clouds were moving in. These intermittently obscured some of the stars. The picture below was taken starting 7.50 for 40 minutes involving 80 exposures of 30 seconds. The centre star is Polaris.

Monday and Tuesday I stayed off the bike. Although mostly sunny the winds increased considerably to probably twice normal. I saw Lewis later in the week and he said he went out on a 50 mile ride to the Northern Mountains and it was the hardest ride of his life and at the top he came close to being blown off his bike.

It had calmed down by Thursday but I stayed off the bike again as this week I have had back pain and took it easy. On Friday I did a short ride to the Plateau taking scenic quiet lanes.

Today, Saturday was my longest ride of the week. First it was up to the Plateau to Geria and a long descent to Yaiza. Then more descending south to near sea level. Then it was a beautiful ride on a road on lava cliffs. This road was closed to traffic for part of it but they allowed bikes through and I passed a film crew there. I stopped at Los Hervideros where waves come in under the lava for a picture.

Then it was back to base and 35 miles for the day.

The last picture goes back to the colourful sunset of 10th January. This was taken later with less light and a much wider angle with more reflections in the sand.

105 miles for the week.

Lanzarote. Week to Saturday 14 January.

This week has remained warm with temperatures of 21 to 22C. There has though been more thin high cloud around. This has been ideal for dawn and sunset colours. With this coinciding with low tides at dawn and sunset I have made a number of trips to the beach with Camera and Tripod for HDR pictures. Dawn is at 07.50 so it has been no hardship to get up in time especially with it being T Shirt and shorts weather even at that time.

The first one was dawn on Monday.

This next one was dawn on Wednesday

The ride last Sunday took me up into the hills via La Geria, then a swooping smooth descent to Yaiza. Then it was a climb across lava fields to Volcano land. Other riders out training from La Santa passed me.

After a picnic lunch in a bus shelter (good seats and shade) it was back down to the coast and the cyclepath and the inevitable stop for an Italian ice cream on the front (essential carb replenishment!)

Wednesday was the longest ride of the week across the plateau and down to the far coast. Then along to Famara overshadowed by 2000ft cliffs. I stopped for a picnic lunch at the town jetty.

Then a long climb back to the plateau against the wind followed by a 6 mile descent to the coast and back to base.

With 4 rides this week total mileage was 110

Lanzarote. Week to Saturday 7 January

I flew here last Tuesday 3 January. It felt like a good day to leave the country with horizontal rain and damaging winds. The Taxi picked me up at 4.00am and it was an uneventful drive up with no fallen trees around. I checked in with 2 and a half hours to spare I went back to the new entrance area to South Terminal to take some pictures. This is part of major improvement works and looks very smart and futuristic. The picture below is an HDR of the entrance walkway

On Wednesday it was a half day ride starting with a 6 mile climb to the plateau at 1000ft. Then it was along the top a bit followed by a 6 mile descent to the coast and back on the cyclepath with a stop at the prom for a delicious Italian Ice Cream. On the outskirts of the small town of San Bartolome on the Plateau there is a small enclosure next to the road with 4 Camels. I stopped for some pictures with my compact and had to back away a little as one camel got quite inquisitive and they do have very very very long noses.

The best ride of the week was on Thursday. I took my SLR in a backpack and Tripod on the rack. First it was up to the Plateau via Tias and Conil. Then I took a road which had previously been a very poor surface but has recently been resurfaced to billiard smooth. Then along to Teguise and into the Church which has great columns and arches, ideal for HDR photos such as the one below.

After a picnic lunch in the Square it was on to Teguise Castle. This is on a hill above the town with a winding road up to it reaching a maximum grade of 14%. Interesting to look round and great views from the top.

Then downhill to Costa Teguise on the coast and back via Arrecife and the 7 mile coastal cyclepath back to Puerto del Carmen. 42 miles for the day.

With another short ride today mileage for the 4 days since I got here was 85.

Sunday 1 January, Ride to Amberley
First a few more HDR pictures. The first is from my day trip to London 3 weeks ago. This is the light trail of a London Bus taken in Parliament Square looking towards Big Ben. The Bus is turning into Whitehall. The feel of movement comes from the long shutter speed of 10 seconds.

I titled this picture London Bus Parliamentary U Turn. This picture got into the Flickr Explore pages, the top 500 pictures of the day on 23rd December out of about a million uploaded. However it also made the top 10 which is known as Explore Front Page and the first page people come to when looking at Explore. As a result the people viewing this picture skyrocketed. After a week I would normally get about 200 views for a picture, this one has had 2700. The number of views of all my pictures on flickr in a day averages about 180. On Christmas Eve it was 3600 due to people seeing this picture.

Today was the New Year’s Day ride to Amberley. Although mild the weather was fairly miserable. There was some light rain early on which cleared but followed by continuous heavy rain all afternoon. The meet was 10.30 Walberton Pond, nominate Leader on the day, I was the only one there so I was nominated. The only other Club rider out was Anne who took a more challenging ride direct to Amberley but via Petworth.

When I left Walberton the early light rain had cleared. I headed via Slindon and then the lanes via Madehurst to climb to Whiteways. Then it was along the top on the A29 towards Bury. I stopped for a photo looking down on the Arun Valley. The clouds were touching the tops of the Downs but anytime this is a great view.

After a fast descent of Bury Hill it was right on the lane via Bury to Houghton and then Amberley. In the village I joined John Maxim, Tony Yorke and Graham who like me arrived 10 minutes early. We had a good substantial meal at The Black Horse. Other Arun Adur members joined us coming direct, most by bike. I think there were about 12 from Arun Adur, just myself and Anne from Bognor Chichester and nobody from Horsham.

During lunch the heavy rain started and we got bikes sorted outside for departure.

John, Anne and I headed back via Houghton Hill. It is not many times that I cycle up Houghton Hill with a river of water flowing down it.

My mileage from and back to Pagham was 34.

Sunday 18 December, Tinsel Ride to Barnham
First a few more HDR pictures. Just over a week ago I took another day trip to London for some more pictures. This first one was taken at Tooting Station on the Northern Line. This was taken close to the platform and at an angle for more drama. The shutter speed was slow to get movement in the train.

The next picture was taken at London Bridge Station in a connecting Tunnel between the Jubilee Line and the Northern line. The Jubilee Line is quite futuristic and I titled this Tunnel to Infinity.

Today was the Tinsel Ride to Barnham led by Arthur and meeting at Chichester Cross. The weather was sunny and dry but very cold starting at 0C and rising to the dizzy heights of 5C. The local CTC members meeting at the Cross were Arthur, Lynn, Richard, Keith, Jan and myself (Edwin) We were joined by 5 friends of Arthur from the Moulton Club making 11 in all. Alan and Liz joined us at Elevenses and John and Harvey at lunch so 15 out on the day in total.

Arthur led us East via Shopwyke and then Tangmere. Then it was the cycle bridge over the A27. The bridge has a total distance 1/3 of a mile.

Then on via Boxgrove and Hanaker. Then it was a short climb on the A285 before turning off on a lane. We descended carefully with bits of ice to worry about. In a dip at the bottom the road was flooded fairly deep across. We made our way around and a considerate motorist waited behind until we were clear.

Then it was up to Eartham before descending to Aldingbourne for a welcome break. We were joined here by Alan and Liz. After the break Di was awarded the prize for best decorated bike.

We all gathered to set off again.

Arthur led us back via Fontwell and the underpass under the A27. Then it was down to Walberton and on to Barnham for lunch at Lily’s cafe where we took over. We were joined there by John Maxim, Harvey and also Chris Davies.

After lunch I headed straight home taking the Barnham cyclepath across the fields to Flansham and Felpham, Then back on the seafront. There were some quite dramatic clouds over the sea with the sun low behind them.

Mileage from and back to Chichester would have been about 21 miles. My mileage was 29 from Pagham.

First a few more HDR pictures. Early this month I took advantage of some clear weather to take Dawn pictures on and around Bognor pier.

For the next picture I played with some software to combine 3 pictures including a volcanic landscape on Lanzarote to create an image of a far off planet within a Galactic Nebula. When I put pictures on flickr the photo sharing website they gain total views from people around the world of in the region of 200 over several weeks or months. Something special happened to this picture. It was spotted by somebody in the Stumbleupon network. This is sort of a cross between a search engine and a social network. Somebody spotted the picture and clicked to say they liked it so it was recommended to their friends with similar interests and so on like a chain reaction. Since the picture was uploaded to flickr last Wednesday it has been viewed by over 1500 people from around the world

The ride today was scheduled to go to Queen Elizabeth Country Park Cafe for lunch. The day started with heavy rain but this had eased to very light rain by the time I set off for Chichester Cross. I was the leader and only Sam joined me. Colin and Anne were off riding a Randonee. We saw and chatted to Chris on his way back from bell ringing but he did not join us on the ride. We were a little doubtful about the ride but in the end decided on a morning only ride to Compton for elevenses.

Sorry no pictures as I forgot my camera but the day was pretty dismal. The light rain continued for about 20 minutes after we set off but then dried up for the rest of the morning. I took a route via Centurion Way, West Stoke and Funtington. Then it was the B Road up via West Marden to Compton Stores for elevenses. While we were there 2 mountain bikers arrived spattered with mud from head to toe. The slightly horrified looking cafe lady asked if they planned to sit inside, but no they were sitting outside. Surprisingly she would have allowed them to sit inside but would have wanted to get something to cover the chairs.

We headed back via Finchdean, Rowlands Castle and Westbourne. It stayed dry until we got back to Chichester but light rain started again soon after. I was fairly well kitted out for the weather. Gortex coat and overtrousers and waterproof gloves and overshoes with somewhat less high tech but effective plastic bags inside. There’s a cycling saying much used by cycle magazine editors when reviewing waterproof cycle clothing and even more often by waterproof cycle clothing manufacturers and retailers. This is “There is no such thing as inappropriate weather for cycling, only inappropriate clothing” As I cycled back to Pagham against a strong headwind with rain getting heavier I tried to convince myself of how profound and true that statement is, sorry couldn’t quite manage it!

Mileage from and back to Chichester was 29. My mileage for the day was 39.

Today there was a ride to the Clubs’ Christmas Lunch at The Spotted Cow, Hunston. The Appetite Improver ride was led by Anne and went to Compton for elevenses before returning to Hunston for lunch. Anne was joined at Chichester Cross at 08.30 by Sam, John and Colin. I joined later at Compton.

The weather was dry if cloudy and not as cold as it might have been at about 11C.

Anne led the ride via the climb to Pillygreen and down to East Dean. Then it was Lavant, West Stoke and Funtington and on to Compton. After elevenses Colin and John left to take longer routes home as they did not come to the Lunch.

Anne, Sam and I returned on the valley road with a slight downhill and tailwind. Then it was back via Funtington and West Ashling and from Chichester the Canal Path to Hunston. There were 17 for the lunch with most arriving by bike from various directions.

Mileage on the appetite improver ride from and back to Chichester was about 45.

Sunday 27 November, Ride to East Wittering
First a few more HDR pictures. A week ago I did another day trip to London. The first one was taken on the Docklands Light Railway looking out the rear window of the last carriage as it went through the tunnel under the Thames near Greenwich. The feel of movement comes from the longer shutter speed.

Sunday’s ride was a flat one to East Wittering. The day started with some heavy showers but cleared to sunshine by 9.30. It stayed bright and sunny the rest of the day, if somewhat windy and temperatures up to 12C.

Arthur was unable to lead the ride so I substituted. I was joined at the Cross by Avryl and Keith. Chris stopped off to say hello on the way back from bell ringing but did not join us.

Avryl and I had both received emails a few days ago from a new cafe just opened in West Wittering called The Landings. We decided to head straight there to try them out. I led the group via Appledram Lane and a section of The Salterns Way to Chichester Yacht basin. Then it was across the lock gates and over to Birdham Pool. We rode down the main road a little way before turning off on back lanes round to West Wittering.

The cafe is on the road towards the beach opposite the Pub. It was nicely done up and we enjoyed a pleasant break there helping Keith with his crossword.

Rather than take the main route we headed back on the lane we came in on a little way before taking another lane which came out in East Wittering, a short ride to lunch at The Boulevard Cafe.  After lunch we continued down to the sea watching big waves coming in and a lot of surfers.

Then it was lanes via Earnley and a very quiet one via Ham, one car in 10 minutes. Then on to Sidlesham and a brief stop by the harbour which had the benefit of High Tide and water instead of mud.

A little way up the road Keith turned off to go back via Pagham. Avryl and I continued on the cycle route across fields to Fisher and back via Runcton and Merston.

Mileage from and back to Chichester would have been about 25. My mileage for the day was 34.
